who i am

Your Basics is run by me, Hannah Roese (ABN 25 798 959 076), from Melbourne, Australia. When this policy says "I", "me" or "Your Basics", that's who it means. I handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles.

what i collect

Things you give me

• Contact form: your name, email address, what your message is about, and the message itself.
• Newsletter: your email address when you subscribe to Letters from a Shopaholic.
• Emails and DMs: whatever you choose to include when you get in touch directly.
• Purchases: if you buy something from me, your name, email and billing details. Payments are handled by the payment provider at checkout, and I never see or store your full card details.

Things collected automatically

When you visit the site, my website platform records standard information such as the pages you view, your browser and device type, the site that sent you here, and your approximate location (city or country level). This is used to understand which formulas people find useful. It isn't used to identify you personally.

how i use it

• To reply to your messages.
• To send you the newsletter, if you've subscribed.
• To deliver anything you've bought, and to keep the records the law requires.
• To work out which content is useful, so I can make more of it.
• To turn questions and stories you send into formulas or newsletter content. I won't use your name or anything that identifies you unless you've said yes.

I don't sell, rent or trade your personal information, and I don't use it for anything you wouldn't reasonably expect.

who it's shared with

I use a few trusted services to run Your Basics. They only get what they need to do their job:

• Squarespace hosts this website, collects contact form messages and provides site analytics.
• Substack runs my newsletter and stores subscriber email addresses.
• Google provides the email inbox where your messages arrive.
• Payment providers (such as Stripe or PayPal) process payments if you buy something.

These services are based in, or store data in, other countries, mainly the United States. Each has its own privacy policy and security measures. I may also share information if the law requires it.

cookies

Cookies are small files saved by your browser. This site uses cookies that are needed for it to work, plus analytics cookies that show how the site is used. The newsletter sign up box is provided by Substack, which may set its own cookies. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site will still work, though some parts may not.

the newsletter

Every newsletter has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. Click it and you're off the list straight away. Substack's own privacy policy covers how it handles subscriber data.

how long i keep it

I keep personal information only as long as I need it. Contact form messages are deleted once they're no longer needed. Newsletter details stay until you unsubscribe. Purchase records are kept for as long as Australian tax law requires.

keeping it safe

I use reputable platforms with their own security protections, and secure my accounts with strong passwords and two factor sign in. No system is perfect, but I take reasonable steps to protect your information from misuse, loss and unauthorised access.

your choices

Wherever you live, you can ask me to:

• tell you what personal information I hold about you
• correct anything that's wrong
• delete your information

under 16s

Your Basics is made for adults. I don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you think I have, email me and I'll delete it.

complaints

If you're unhappy with how I've handled your information, email me first and I'll do my best to sort it out. If you're still not satisfied, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.

changes

I may update this policy as Your Basics grows. The date at the top will always show when it last changed.
